PRESS RELEASE - Creative Youth in the Flower Market
In the early hours of Wednesday 25 February, 21 teams of floristry students from ten colleges were hard at work, competing in the February College Day in New Covent Garden Flower Market, sponsored by LANTRA.
Armed with a wad of ten pound notes, the students were on the quest to source flowers, foliage, plants and sundries from the Flower Market traders to meet the brief presented to them that morning by organisers Covent Garden Market Authority: “A seasonal table centre for a keen gardener on her 60th birthday lunch in a country house hotel”.
“Without exception, the standard of all the designs was very high and each take on the brief was unique and highly creative,” says judge Sarah Holland of the Flowers & Plants Association (herself a former tutor at Jane Packer Flower School).
Together with fellow judge Barry Porter of wholesaler Porters Foliage, Sarah was looking not only for designs that closely met the brief, but also demonstrated intelligent sourcing of top quality seasonal materials and sundries and recorded accurate information on cost, origin and variety names.
Plumpton College emerged victorious in both the Level 2 and Level 3 categories and Hadlow College won the Level 4 category, with Plumpton’s Level 2 winners judged the overall winners of the competition.
“The winning piece from Plumpton’s Level 2 team was very attractive, well sourced, very appropriate for the brief given and very well made,” explains Sarah Holland. “Sometimes, simplicity will out!”
“The students have learnt a tremendous amount from the College Day,” says Sue Maguire, tutor at Plumpton College. “It was great fun for them to work to a tight timescale, a good budget and to have the vast range of stock at the Flower Market to choose from! The traders were really helpful and I’m really proud of what our students have achieved.”
